Across three countries. Day one. Trains and bubbles.

As Finland recently became a full NATO member, I embarked on my first visit to this enchanting country. Helsinki greeted me with its familiar beauty, and I was eager to explore the historic city of Turku. Join me on this memorable journey as we delve into the rich history of Turku Castle and set sail on the magnificent Viking Grace.

Arriving in Helsinki, I was delighted to find that not much had changed since Finland's NATO membership. The city retained its timeless charm, with its captivating architecture and serene atmosphere. At the railway station, the atlants stood tall, holding the globes, while the Ukrainian flag proudly reminded us of the importance of unity in safeguarding the Western world.

With our train tickets pre-booked on the convenient VR Matkalla app, we set off for Turku, ensuring a hassle-free journey. Finnish trains proved to be comfortable and well-equipped, featuring amenities such as power sockets, ample legroom, and overhead baggage space. For families traveling with children, I highly recommend the family car, which offers a playground for little ones to enjoy. We settled on the second level of the train, enjoying the picturesque views as we made our way to Turku.

Upon arriving in Turku, we embarked on a leisurely walk along the Aurajoki River, marvelling at the city's blend of nature, medieval vibes, and summertime allure. Turku's unique character reminded me of a combination of Estonia's Pärnu and Tartu, with the added charm of both a river and a sea. With a few hours to spare, we couldn't resist visiting the historic gem of Turku – Turku Castle.

Stepping into Turku Castle felt like stepping back in time. Construction of this magnificent fortress began in 1280 under the orders of the Swedish crown, as Finland was under Swedish rule at the time. Initially designed as a military stronghold to protect Turku and its surroundings, the castle evolved over the centuries. It transformed into a royal residence, a courthouse, and even a prison. Today, Turku Castle stands as an important cultural and historical landmark in Finland, enticing visitors with its stunning architecture and rich heritage. I was particularly captivated by the play of light inside the castle, which added to its ethereal beauty.

Our journey continued as we made our way to the Viking Grace, a ship that had always piqued my curiosity. Opting for this maritime adventure rather than a direct flight to Copenhagen proved to be a wise choice. The Viking Grace offered a remarkable experience with its spa facilities located on the top floor. I indulged in the saunas and jacuzzies, surrounded by giant windows that offered panoramic views of the Turku archipelago. The combination of bubbling water, soothing heat, and the mesmerizing sunset created a truly magical atmosphere.

As we bid farewell to NATO and set sail toward Sweden, my first day in Finland proved to be an unforgettable experience. Helsinki's enduring beauty, Turku's historic charm, and the serenity of the Viking Grace combined to create a perfect introduction to this Nordic nation. I eagerly anticipated the adventures that awaited me in the days ahead, ready to explore more of Finland's cultural riches and natural wonders.
